It's hard to describe the sound, since sound is such a subjective thing. What sounds quiet to me, may be deafening to someone else. One of the benefits of the supertrapp is the ability to tailor the sound to your liking. If you use just a few disks, you'll get a deeper, and somewhat louder sound than the stock. You can also go the other way and get a very loud bike. I use 8 discs with an open end cap on my 98, and compared to the stock, it sounds like a totally different bike. Much louder than the original. I like it much better this way, but beauty is in the ear of the beholder.
If you're happy with the sound of the stock pipe, I'd say keep it. You'd be better off spending the $200 on a new saddle or pad. The stock seat can be a real pain in the ass.
